International Astronautical Congress

The International Astronautical Congress (IAC) is the world’s largest annual gathering dedicated to space exploration, space science, and the global aerospace sector.

Established in 1950, the Congress brings together space agencies, commercial companies, researchers, educators, policymakers, and students from more than seventy nations.

It is organised by the International Astronautical Federation, with support from the International Institute of Space Law and other affiliated bodies.

# Venue Rotation Each year the IAC is hosted by a different country, rotating among continents. Host cities are selected through a competitive bidding process in which national space agencies, universities, or government bodies propose venue plans and thematic visions for their event. The rotating format ensures that the Congress reflects the diversity of the global space community and strengthens international cooperation.

# Programme A typical IAC programme features plenary talks, technical sessions, research presentations, exhibitions, and side events such as industry meetings or educational programmes. Space agencies use the Congress to announce missions, partnerships, and policy updates. Universities and research institutes present scientific findings, while companies showcase technologies ranging from satellites and launch systems to robotics, habitats, and AI-driven operations.

# Space Moot The Congress is also the setting for the prestigious Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court World Final, where the winning regional teams argue a space-law dispute before judges of the International Court of Justice. This integration of legal, scientific, and industrial fields reflects the IAC’s role as a crossroads for all aspects of human activity in space.

The IAC’s themes change each year, focusing on emerging priorities such as lunar exploration, Mars missions, commercial spaceflight, sustainability in orbit, planetary defence, and the future of international space governance. Its exhibitions attract thousands of participants, making it a key platform for diplomacy, research collaboration, and commercial networking in the global space sector.
